Chapter Four

Cat

Liam and I exit the dining hall and go out into the cool evening. I breathe in the pleasant scents of autumn and listen to him excitedly going on about a subject I’d lost interest in halfway through dinner. I’d already told him almost every detail of my day filled with awesome classes, managing to push back the frustrations of my morning. But after he slipped past describing his classes, and started talking about some new ideas he planned to research in the library, my thoughts had begun to wander.

To what had happened last night.

Usually after I died I felt weak and shaky. But today? Today I’d almost felt better than usual. Which is weird. And makes no sense.

Memories flash back of Zach inside of me, fucking me like a desperate man, and of the feel of his teeth piercing my flesh. Despite myself, I feel myself growing aroused. Maybe I felt so much better than usual because death had never been pleasurable before last night, or maybe it was because the way I was sore and tired had more to do with fucking a hot man all night rather than slipping into death.

I didn’t know. But I knew it was hard to focus on my classes, my delicious meal, on anything, when my mind started sliding back to my night with the alpha.

Damn it. Zach was an asshole. The last thing I wanted was to find him... arousing.

I was supposed to be focused on all the amazing classes I’d taken. All the things I’d soon be learning about this world of magic. Not the alpha asshole Zach.

“You okay?”

I blink and find Liam staring at me, his big brown eyes holding a question.

“What?”

He laughs. “We were in the middle of talking, and then you were just... gone.”

I feel my cheeks heating. “Sorry.”

He shakes his head of dark hair, a smile teasing his lips. “No worries.”

We continue walking down the sidewalk, neither of us talking. And I do everything in my power not to let my mind start slipping back to sexy vampires. Overhead, the streetlamps flicker on, illuminating the entire sidewalk in patches, stretching out throughout campus. The sudden brightness makes me realize just how quickly night descends in this area.

“I’ve got kind of an awkward question,” Liam says.

This should be interesting. “Shoot.”

“I, uh, heard you and Eric were... an item or something.”

I stare at him. “What?”

He blushes. “Yeah, I heard you guys came into class after clearly, uh, well...”

Is that what people thought? “Oh, no. No way. I just helped him out with something, so he helped me get into class late without getting in trouble.”

Liam stares at me, looking unconvinced. “I’ve never heard of an alpha helping a Null.”

I shrug. “Well, he did, and that was all there was to it.”

We’re quiet a minute longer. The darkness of the night seems to deepen.

“Just be careful.”

I glance at him. “Why?”

He seems to choose his words with care. “People won’t like the idea of a Null and an alpha together.
